Village Garden

The Women’s Institute and Pathway 21

Pathway 21 was the name given to a group of volunteers in the village of Ystradowen to manage and maintain the layby garden on the A4222.  Originally this was a millennium project instigated by the Women’s Institute to transform a part of the village that had become overgrown and neglected with the aim to create a better future i.e. a Pathway into the 21st Century.  The results of that project are very visible to all, 20 years after it all began, and now not only the WI are involved but residents of the village too, who have a common interest in our environment.

This summer we had to have the trees, shrubs and hedges at the back of the layby professionally cut to keep the garden in good order, and it is with much gratitude that we thank the WI for funding this work.  TP Landscapes who took on the task were quick, efficient and took away all the cuttings, so a big thank you goes to them too.  However, our biggest thanks goes to the WI for paying the bill.

Any lady interested in joining the WI, we meet on the first Wednesday in the month at the Village Hall in Ystradowen at 7.15pm.  Our aim is to enjoy a friendly evening of chat, tea and cake and listen to  interesting speakers on various topics. We arrange walks, coffee mornings, theatre trips and days out, so there is a lot going on.

Also, anyone interested in joining our team of helpers in the layby (male or female of any age) would be very welcome.  We meet the first Saturday in each month from April to October at 10.30am, so we will start again in 2022.  You do not need to be a gardener, just someone with an enthusiasm to look after our community.
